Phantom in Sydney Report

by Jaime Crawford

THURSDAY, SEPTEMBER 11th, 2008
9am (Adelaide time)
I am all packed and ready to go to the Airport to catch my "Virgin Blue" midday flight to Sydney; as soon as the taxi arrives. I am traveling alone this time around because this time, Teena, is unable to make it with me.
9:15am
The taxi has arrived, and I am now on my way to the Airport. Gosh, I do hope that the aircraft will be able to get off the ground! It's a pretty quiet ride down to the Airport - but that doesn't bother me. I'm really not much of a talker anyway. (Am I Teena?)
9:30am
Well, here I am at the Adelaide Airport! Gosh, it really is so different to what I remember; it is so large! (Before today, the last time I was here at the Airport was in late November of 1997 - and that was to go over to Sydney to see Mr. Michael Crawford - performing at the Lyric Theatre to celebrate the opening of the Star City Casino complex.)
9:45am
My Suitcase and Walker have been checked in successfully, and I have my Boarding Pass, so I am now making my way towards the entry security gate with my wooden walking-stick in my left hand, and my black "Wheelie" bag with a White-Handled plastic bag clipped onto the "Wheelie" Bag in my right hand pulled behind me. (The plastic bag is more like a "hand-bag" in appearance; it's not like a plastic shopping bag.) I am wearing a purple track-suit with purple Ugg Boots, my black Phantom Hat and one pair of Phantom ear-rings; a pair of silver logo mask ear-rings. (My Phantom Costume is packed safely in my Suitcase. Well, I couldn't wear that to the Airport and into the plane now, could I?) Placing my MP3 Player into a plastic container to go through the X-Ray machine next to me, I have somebody help me place both my black bag and my plastic bag onto the conveyor belt to go through the X-Ray machine with my MP3 Player for checking. I step through the security doorway; only to set it off.) What a MAJOR embarrassment. I thought immediately that my silver Phantom logo ear-rings had set it off; but it was not my ear-rings. It was my mobile phone that had set it off. Oh gosh. I forgot about my mobile phone! HOW EMBARRASSING. Taking my mobile phone out of my Jacket pocket, I place it into the plastic container with my MP3 Player. I also place my wooden walking-stick onto the conveyor belt. As the plastic container and my bags went through the machine, I attempted to move through the doorway again - quietly this time - and with some assistance - since my walking-stick was going through the machine.

I make it through to the other side. Not a BEEP out of it! YAY. I MADE IT! Retrieving my mobile phone, my MP3 Player, my wooden walking-stick, and my black bag and plastic bag from the X-Ray machine, I move on. Watch out Sydney - and Anthony/Erik. HERE I COME. My Boarding Bay is number 14 and since I have some time to kill, I get busy filming. Just filming some of the "Virgin Blue" aircraft, which is the airline that I will be flying with. It is a lovely red aircraft; and I DO like red. VvvvV
Approximately 11:30am
I am asked to sit in a wheelchair to be taken into the aircraft.
11:40am
Well, I am now on board the aircraft; rows of three seats - and rather - shall I say - tight. I am sitting on the left-hand side of the plane, just behind the left wing. I have a Window Seat, 25A.
12:17pm
The aircraft is slowly reversing now, to get into position on the runway.
12:27pm
The aircraft is now moving into takeoff position and after a brief stop.....
12:30pm.
...Ooooh, heeeere we go.
12:37pm
As Frank Spencer: "Ooooh! We're in the air! I can feel myself rising!" Hmm. I'm feeling a little light-headed - which I wasn't expecting; so I'll just lay back and close my eyes for a little while. It is great having a Window Seat - which I wanted. I was asked if I wanted a Window Seat, which I did NOT refuse. I gaze out - and below me - to the light, cotton-ball-like clouds.
12:40pm
The cloud coverage - BELOW me is much thicker and larger now. And gazing down onto the earth below, it reminds me of England. So green!

ARGH! For the last few minutes now, my ears have been popping. So - is this what Heaven is like? Except for the ears popping! I LIKE IT!
1:45pm
Almost ready to land now. The aircraft is now coming in, and since I can see the left wing, it has been extremely interesting to watch - occasionally. Allow me to elaborate on this. There are several "flaps" on the wing and, during the flight, some of the smaller flaps at the top of the wing had opened up, to assist with slowing the aircraft down a little at one point during the flight. Now, those same flaps, plus a couple of larger ones at the base of the wing are fully opened - to assist with stopping the aircraft quickly once on the ground. It was very interesting to see that.
2:30pm (Sydney time)
Touch-down in Sydney. Watch out Sydney - and Anthony/Erik. I'M HERE, I'M HERE, THE ANGEL OF DEATH. (Oh, sorry. I'm stuck in PHANTOM mode.)
Everything has gone well.
2:45pm
Waiting for an assistant to take me down to Luggage Claim.
3pm
AAAARRRRGGGGHHHH! I am STILL WAITING!
3:30pm
This is absolutely ridiculous. I am STILL WAITING!!!! >:o I just canNOT walk THAT FAR!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Not sure of the time right now; I am just too stressed. I feel a tremendous need to quote Erik at this point now, so I do; but under my breath. "YOU TRY MY PATIENCE!!!"
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
AH! FINALLY! AT LAST! A wheelchair attendant arrives! Well, it's about flamin' time! Stepping into the wheelchair, both my black bag and my plastic bag are placed onto my lap, and I am wheeled down to the Luggage Claim area by the attendant. Oh, what a relief!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
FINALLY, the wheelchair attendant arrives at the Luggage Terminal! My Walker is there, waiting for me - but WHERE is my Suitcase?! It has my Phantom Costume in it - and other things as well, of course. I make my way over to the Baggage Office to inquire as to if my Suitcase is there. A woman goes into the back to check for me. No such luck. (So - WHERE THE HECK IS IT?!, my mind is screaming.) My details are taken down on a "Lost Property" report; a PROPERTY IRREGULARITY REPORT. I am hoping that, during my stay with a friend tonight, that I WILL get a telephone call to say that it has been found - TODAY/TONIGHT. OH GOSH, I HOPE SO. OH, FOR THAT TELEPHONE CALL.
Some time between 4pm and 5pm
I arrive at my friend's residence safely - minus my Suitcase - which I'm sure surprised her at first.
6pm
My mobile phone rings. And, before you ask, yes, my ring-tone IS, naturally, "THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA". Is this the phone-call that I am hoping for? Is this "Virgin Blue" ringing with (HOPEFULLY) good news? I answer my phone. Ah yes. It IS the phone-call that I have been waiting for. It is "Virgin Blue". HOORAY. A woman's voice gives me the news that I'm longing to hear - although I have to hold the receiver away from my ear, because her voice is VERY loud. (Please, Madam. I will need my ears on Sunday. I do actually want to HEAR the Phantom of the Opera show, as well as see it, you know.)
Well, in two to three hours, my Suitcase should be delivered to me at my friend's residence. Oh gosh, that's a whole lotta STRESS lifted from me now.
7:22pm
My Suitcase has finally arrived. Gosh, what a day it has been. Thank goodness I WILL have my Phantom Costume for the 14th. Now that I do have my Suitcase - AND my Phantom Costume, I will put my Costume on to show my friend.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
She likes my Costume. :-D
But then - so do I as well.
She thinks that I look really good in it.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Late in the day.
PHEW!!!! WHAT A DAY! I am so ready for bed. Good night. ZZZZ
FRIDAY, SEPTEMBER 12th, 2008
9:30am
"Virgin Blue" rang to inquire as to if my Suitcase has been returned to me. I stated that, yes, it had been returned to me last night. So far - the only downer about coming to Sydney has been the Lost Suitcase incident. (I don't even want to think about Monday.)
Before leaving my friend's residence, as she is ringing for a taxi, I ensure that I have everything before it arrives to take me to my Hotel in the city, the PARK REGIS Hotel, at 27 Park Street - very close to Hyde Park.
2:15pm
Coming into the city from staying overnight with my friend, I see a bus with a Last Show PHANTOM OF THE OPERA banner on its right-hand side. Oh!, I think, as I make a mad "dash" for my movie-camera. But - curses of curses - I am not quick enough.
"DAMN YOU! CURSE YOU!"
====================
I have just checked-in to my Hotel; I have a nice room on Level 9, Room Number 913. This Hotel has 45 floors! On the 45th floor, there is a pool; but, unfortunately, I will not be swimming, because the pool is not heated! And I was so looking forward to having a swim; but NOT in water that is stone-cold. BRRRR!!!! I do NOT want to catch a cold - and who knows what else - and bring it with me to the show on the 14th. No siree. I don't want to give a cold to THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA - if I should catch up with him? So, for the rest of the day - after checking-in and sorting-out my outfit for the show on the 14th, I will try, once again, to catch that elusive Phantom Banner. Wish me luck, folks!
4:55pm
Well, after some dinner; a cheeseburger and a Sprite lemonade, I will try once again before it gets too dark.
5:15pm
YAY! SUCCESS! I FINALLY caught an ad on the side of a bus.
5:20pm
Back in my Hotel Room. OK! Now, to check my "handiwork".
5:26pm
OH NO! I wasn't successful after all. Well, I'll see how I go tomorrow. Wish me LOTS O' LUCK, FOLKS!
10:30pm
Well, it's time now for bed, so I bid you all a good night. Come tomorrow, I will try again to get that elusive Phantom Banner.
SATURDAY, SEPTEMBER THE 13th, 2008.
(mm, interesting. My Room Number, 913, is the same as today's date: 9/13.
7:40am
Well folks, here I go once again, setting off from my Hotel on my quest for a Phantom Bus.
8:10am
Oh gosh, I DO HOPE that, THIS TIME, I have been successful?!
8:30am
OK folks! I'm back in my Hotel Room. After I have my bacon and egg Mcmuffin and my Apple Juice, I will check my movie camera. Stay tuned, folks!
8:45am
HOORAY, I have been successful! Although - DUH! I didn't even THINK to zoom in! Soooo, I'll go out again later on, and see if I can get a CLOSEUP of a Phantom of the Opera Banner! Gosh, the things that I do for THE PHANTOM.
11am
Leaving the Hotel, I'm off again on my Phantom Banner quest. Well, I've been wandering around for 15 minutes now, but no such luck as yet.
11:25am
As I stand at the traffic lights, waiting to cross the road, the monorail train goes directly over me. YIKES! I did not realize that I was standing directly under the monorail line! One minute later, to my right, I see a stationary taxi - with a Phantom of the Opera banner on the back of it. Now, THIS ONE I CAN'T MISS! I'll check my camera when I'm back at the Hotel; and this time, I KNOW that I'll at least have one close-up Banner.
11:48am
Yes. It turned out well. Well, it had to really; I mean, it surely couldn't have NOT turned out - with the taxi being stationary.
1pm
PHEW! I am on my way out - AGAIN. Gee, I do seem to be spending a lot of time out searching for a Phantom Banner, don't I? Oh well. I am here on my own, so I need to pass the time somehow. Searching. Searching for that oh-so elusive Phantom of the Opera Bus Banner.
1:25pm
Oh, my goodness me! Now, THIS is going to be ONE PERFECT SHOT.
1:40pm
I have just played back what I have just recorded. SUCCESS! AT LAST! SUCCESS! I did get a shot earlier, but I did want to get a close-up - which I just didn't THINK to do before! DUH! I am now going up to the top floor - the 45th floor of this Hotel - to an outdoor balcony - to do some more filming; although, to reach the pool, there is a staircase to go up. "Wonderful" for me. I wanted to have a swim - but there are wretched steps (so many wretched steps) - AND the pool is NOT heated! And I so wanted to have a swim too. I will drag myself up there though, because I want to see it/film it. But, oh boy. It ain't easy. I did some filming last night, and I want something during the day as well. I also SMS'd Cathy, another Sydney friend of mine while I am here in Sydney, to let her know that I am here right now - if she'd like to see me. So we'll be catching up soon. It will be great to see her again - even though she does wear me out.
10:20pm
Well, Cathy is here now; she came around to my Hotel a few hours ago, and we had some tea together, before going up onto the 45th floor to have a swim.
NOOOO WAAAAY.
We had some tea together, before going up onto the 45th floor to look out over the city; even though it is rather late at night now.
Even Later
I have just seen my friend Cathy to her taxi - although she was saying that she wanted to stay up on the balcony all night long. I am so ready for bed now. Not sure of what the actual time is now, cuz I'm too tired to look; I just want to go to bed. Good night all.
SUNDAY, SEPTEMBER 14th, 2008.
Oh gosh, Folks! Today is THE DAY. Today I see – and hear - Erik again. This will be the 12th time for me. (Note: From May the 24th, 2009; I have now seen the show 19 times. And that is STILL so NOT enough.)
7am
Gee I'm awake early! Time to rise and shower; even though the show is not until 3pm. I can't stay in bed any longer. I am much too excited.
7:16am
OK, time to get my makeup ready. At THIS time?! Yeah. I know.
I apply my cleanser and toner, so in ten minutes, I will apply my moisturizer, and continue on with the rest of my makeup.
8am
I had my timer set for this time. And my makeup is already - almost - fully on. I can't help it. I absolutely LOVE The Phantom of the Opera. And, my goodness me! It's raining! I won't put on my Black half-mask, Phantom of the Opera earrings, and lipstick until I'm fully ready. OK. Now to tie my hair back, and then put my Costume on. YAY!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am now fully dressed in my Phantom Costume - except for the cape and the mask. After placing my Phantom Hat onto my head, I am ready to go, and the show isn't until 3pm! (My cape and mask are in my Black Phantom Tote Bag; I will put them on later.)
9am
It is a rainy Sunday Sydney morning, and I am now in a taxi on the way to the Lyric Theatre for the 3pm PHANTOM OF THE OPERA Show. Yes, I know I'm early. EXTREMELY early. But hey, I'm seeing THE PHANTOM.
9:15am
I have just arrived at the Theatre. My goodness! That was QUICK! Surprisingly, I'm the only one here at the moment. (Well, as far as I know. If there is anybody else here now who is from the Anthony Warlow "Unexpected Song" fan group, I do not know, because I have never met any of them - as yet.) The last - and only - time that I was here at this theatre before was way back in late November of 1997 - to see Mr. Michael Crawford during the opening of the Star City Casino Complex. So - first I saw Michael Crawford here - and now - pretty much eleven years later, I will be seeing THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA. How ironic.

I spend my time relaxing and occasionally wandering around. I am fully dressed as The Phantom - except for my cape and mask - which I will put on later. I have brought my "Ken" Phantom Doll with me to the Theatre as well - for a possible "show and tell". I don't have my Phantom Ticket with me; I have to pick it up at the Box Office when it opens - so hurry up, 1pm! "You try my PATIENCE!"
1pm
I am sitting close to the Box Office, keeping my eyes on the still closed window.
1pm and a couple of seconds
Ah, it is 1pm! AT LAST! Oh, the window is opening. After another several seconds, I am the first one at the window, stating that there is a PHANTOM OF THE OPERA show ticket for me to pick up. TA DA. I am now holding my PHANTOM Show Ticket in my hot little hands. Ooooh!!!! Excuse me for a moment. I need to make a trip to "Box 5". All the excitement, you understand.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
As I passed by a woman on my way back to the Theatre, she said to me, "I like your hat", to which I replied, "Thank you". I could so understand that. I very much like it myself. It is, after all, my PHANTOM Hat.
1:30pm
Still no sign of the Anthony Warlow "Unexpected Song" fan group yet - that I know of. I decide to put on my cape and my mask now. Once my cape and mask are on, three people approach me; presumably a mother and her two daughters; or a daughter and her friend, perhaps. Anyway, one of the girls is wearing a Phantom mask and a cape. No hat though. Tut tut tut. The young girl looked like she'd be around Phoebe's age or so; 12 or 13 years old. (Phoebe is Anthony Warlow's daughter.) After spending a little bit of time with them, I head off for another walk.
I begin to walk, - with the aid of my Walker - down the walkway. Gosh, what a sight I must have been: THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA walking along a Walkway with a Walker. There are several lovely Phantom of the Opera signs along this walk - which I took photos of earlier. This time, as I pass by a small group of people sitting close-by, I am definitely noticed and asked if I'd mind having some photos taken with them. Naturally, I do NOT mind at all. Ah, I've found them - well, some of them. This small group of people are (as I am) members of the "Unexpected Song" phan group. Watch out, Anthony. We're heeeere.
Some of the ladies are dressed in their own interpretation of a "Christine" outfit. I immediately click with two of the ladies in the group; phantomess and ozzieconxtion. Hello you two. Apart from the young girl whom I saw earlier, I am the only one dressed as Erik. WOO HOO. After spending some time with them, we all soon make our way towards the Lyric Theatre. It will soon be time to go into the Theatre. Oh boy! I so can NOT wait!
Around 2.30pm
After purchasing a Program and two Phantom of the Opera necklaces for Teena; one gold and one silver, and another mask for myself, as well as a mug for another friend, I am oh-so ready to enter the Theatre; but then, who isn't?
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
I am in my seat; seat number D 44, in the 6th Row. It looks like a (relatively) good seat; I should be able to see Erik when he appears above me later on.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The show has started. Scene One plays with no troubles to report; I am pleased to say. Gosh, I so LOVE the Overture. The chandelier rose magnificently up above the stage and into its position high above the audience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
One thing that I had never seen Carlotta do before was, after she said, "These things do happen! Well, until you stop these things happening, this thing does not happen!", she slapped her chest. That was quite an amusing sight. The rest of that scene played out as per normal.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Now - to THE PHANTOM. Gosh, what can I say? As usual, Anthony's voice was absolutely splendid. His first words, "Insolent boy! This slave of fashion...", etc. were absolutely breathtaking. The Phantom was DEFINITELY there; his presence was DEFINITELY felt. And, speaking of feeling; personally, I felt that Mr. Alexander Lewis, who played the "Raoul" character, looked too old to be Christine's lover. He just didn't look right at all - in my personal opinion.
In the Dressing-Room scene - where The Phantom's masked face first appeared to Christine/the audience inside the mirror, the audience roared and applauded loudly - and, naturally, I joined them. From there everything progressed smoothly. Anthony's voice was absolutely magnificent - as always. Once through the mirror, there was darkness as the next scene began to play. The scene played out as it should. Ana Marina performed with Anthony; and she does have a pleasant voice.
Gosh, it was an absolutely GLORIOUS sight seeing The Phantom on the stage/lake poling the gondola along with his captive, and seeing the candelabra rising up during their entrance. WOW! Anthony was VERY sensuous. As the gondola approached the front of the stage and The Phantom stepped out, then helped Christine out, and he commanded her to sing, as she did so, The Phantom did his sexy "thang". PHEW! He sure was one HOT Phantom!
As Christine began to wail, The Phantom glided his hands through his hair and down his thighs - as per usual - but with a - umm – a small difference. Instead of gliding both hands down the front of his thighs - as the character normally does - he glided his hands mid-way down his body before allowing one hand to continue - running it directly over his - umm - "Raoul". WHOA! Things were feeling EVEN HOTTER then. He wasn't - shy - about himself. Gosh, I am surprised that The Phantom didn't set off the fire-alarms/sprinklers at that point! He was totally smokin' - as were the members of the audience. PHEW!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scene 5
The Music Of The Night scene. Oh boy. What can I say? This scene played without incident; although Anthony's ERIK was VERY masculine; as I've mentioned above. As Erik, he made it so totally believable that he wanted the woman Christine; and that he would stop at nothing to have her; emotionally and physically - AND sexually.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scene 6
The next morning. The scene played out as per normal; although, when he was first unmasked, Anthony's Erik allowed his unmasked face to be seen by the audience - at least some of the time. He did cover his face; but only for a moment. He soon brought down his hand as he chased Christine around, totally exposed; although I was further to the right in the audience this time. BUMMER! Well, I was close to the front of the stage (in the 6th row) - although, naturally, I wanted to be closer. (Anthony may be the only actor/singer who plays out some of this scene with his face exposed to the audience; not hidden behind his right hand for the whole scene.) When he dropped to the ground, he played out the scene splendidly. He truly was a broken man, crawling towards Christine. He made it so totally believable that he could not believe what Christine had done; that she had revealed him to see him as he truly was; much to his angst.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
With the "Il Muto" performance, where the character of Don Attilio sings, "I suspect my young bride is untrue to me. I shall not leave, but shall hide over there to observe her!" On the last note ("her"), he held it for a long time - which was very amusing (which the character also did at the last show in Melbourne on the 20th of January, 2008)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During The Phantom's "I Gave You My Music", I am very pleased to say that I could see him perfectly. And my binoculars helped. Gotta have binoculars to see Phantom of the Opera; even if sitting close. He looked - and sounded - so very sad.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
After The Phantom sung "You will curse the day you did not do all that The Phantom asked of you...!", I could see him very clearly above me; just before the chandelier fell.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Masquerade.
As the "Masquerade" music started, there was applause from the audience. The two Managers were very funny. At the beginning of the scene, when they bumped into each other, they both gave a startled cry of fright. Then, when they recognized each other, they showed off their costumes; to the delight and amusement of the audience. Then the scene ran as it does normally. When Red Death appeared, there was loud cheering and applause; and he was very menacing. The scene played out as it should; although, sometimes, he was blocked from my view - which I did not appreciate! ARRGGH!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
The "Wandering Child" scene played out as per usual. In the Mausoleum - where Erik started shooting fireballs, the wall of flames at the end were - shall I say - VERY WARM. I could definitely feel the heat - even at 6 rows back. At a final gesture from The Phantom, there was a final flash of lightning and several large flames flared up across the stage and, some seconds later, there was a definite hot smell - but only for a moment.
PHEW! What HOT stuff!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scene 7
(The Opera House on the night of the Premiere of "Don Juan Triumphant".) Anthony's Point Of No Return was very sensuous. I kind of felt like - in a sense - I was watching Michael Crawford (as well as Anthony). Although I have only ever seen Michael on YouTube, etc. as The Phantom; I have never seen him LIVE as The Phantom. Gosh, I am VERY surprised that the fire-alarms and sprinklers were not set off at this point either! Anthony was totally smokin' - as were the members of the audience.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
During Scene 8
(The Labyrinth Underground), Anthony as The Phantom, unmasked again, played out this scene brilliantly; although, once again, I was very surprised that The Phantom didn't set off the fire alarms and sprinklers! Anthony was totally smokin' all through the show - as were the members of the audience. PHEW!!!!
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Scene 9
Beyond The Lake/The Final Lair Scene. The show went splendidly - until later on during this scene when the audio started to die intermittently. When Anthony/Erik walked away from the audience to approach "Raoul" to place the noose around his neck, he didn't do his "finger wriggling" thing this time when he had his hands behind his back. During this final scene, it was very unfortunate that the microphone kept persistently dying, making it very difficult for Anthony and the other cast members on stage (Erik, Christine & Raoul). DAMMIT. HOWEVER, it was not a total loss, even though it was MAJORLY disappointing. Anthony was such a trooper; and he has such a great voice that we audience members could still hear him. So, even with a DEAD microphone at this point (ARRGGH!) the audience could still hear him. Naturally, to have the microphone working PROPERLY for the WHOLE show would have been appreciated, but despite that mishap, it was, as per usual, a PHANTASTIC show.
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Well, as with all things WONDERFUL, the show inevitably ended. During the cheering and applause that followed, the Anthony Warlow "Unexpected Song" group went frantic also, cheering and applauding joyously. As the cheering and applause continued, just before the Curtain Call, we "Unexpected Song" members put on our own sparkly masks - and other masks - while we waited for the cast members to come forward to take their bows. Finally, the Curtain Call began. The cast members came forward to take their bows; but naturally, the "Unexpected Song" members were waiting for THE PHANTOM/Anthony. FINALLY, Anthony walked out onto the stage, and as he did at the final show in Melbourne on January the 20th, 2008 when Teena and I saw the show together, he was wearing a silver, dazzling, shining, sparkling mask. Myself and the other members of the "Unexpected Song" group cheered and applauded VERY loudly. I'm sure that Anthony KNEW that we were ALL there - even if he could not see all of us. At least, he HEARD us. It really is such a pity that Anthony wouldn't have been able to see all of the "Unexpected Song" members at the Curtain Call wearing their masks. I wonder how he would have reacted if he HAD been able to see us all. I believe that it is generally the first three or four rows that people can see when they're on the stage. The whole audience cheered and applauded. The audience showed NO sign of leaving, so the cast kept taking their bows. Also - as with the 2008 January 20th show - when the line of characters moved forward towards the audience, Anthony did his jolly jump, which was such a treat to see once again. Finally, the Curtain closed for a final time, making the show well and truly over.

(I wanna see it again. I WANNA SEE IT AGAIN.) Twelve times is so NOT enough. (Nineteen times now. Which is STILL so NOT enough.

After the show, myself and The Anthony Warlow "Unexpected Song" group began to leave the Theatre, along with the rest of the audience members; a massive crowd. I met back up with a couple of very nice ladies from the "Unexpected Song" group that I had met earlier that day before the show - phantomess and ozzieconxtion - and we three made our way towards the backstage area; which was very slow and difficult for me; but I did have some help. Thank goodness. (Thank you phantomess and ozzieconxtion.)
~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~~
Finally - we were at the backstage area. Boy, what a trek for me. As my new phriends and I waited around the backstage area for a possible glimpse/signature from any of the cast members - ESPECIALLY Anthony - we laughed and chatted as other people began to arrive. Here we stood, waiting backstage - waiting - and hoping - for Mr. Anthony Warlow to appear.
Would he appear? And, if so, when? We did not know. Now - as for getting signatures/autographs: well yes, I did manage to get some signatures. After a time, the different cast members began to appear - to screams of recognition and joyous cheers and applause. I was fortunate enough to obtain both Ana Marina's (Christine Daa'e) and Nadia Komazec's (Meg Giry) signatures in both Teena's and my Programs. Also, before Ana went on her way, I just HAD to say something to her. After she had signed my PHANTOM Program, I said to her, “Before you go, could you do me a favor?" (I wonder what was going through her mind at that point.) Well, as you know, she played Christine - and I was dressed up as Erik, so... I said to her, "Sing for me." She responded with, "Not for three weeks."
I just couldn't help myself; I just couldn't resist. (There is a photo of Ana Marina and myself, but I'm waiting for the person who took the photo to send it to me.)
(I have the photo now; I now have two photos of both myself and Anthony Warlow, and two photos of both myself and Ana Marina.) Ana performed with Anthony that day; although I found out later that those who were at the Sunday Show were VERY LUCKY to see/hear Anthony as Erik. Apparently, he had been off for a while just recently - not sure exactly for how long though; so the audience members there on that day were very lucky - and happy, of course - that he did perform. I am so happy that he did perform on the 14th; being the final show in Sydney; and with myself being able to be there for that show.
Now, as for getting Anthony's signature/autograph: Well...some time later, after standing around - chatting with other phans of the show - Anthony himself FINALLY did appear and the screaming was absolutely deafening. OWW. My ears. He was very gracious as he was swarmed by the crowd. He signed Programs and posed and smiled for photographs. Before obtaining Anthony's signatures (three of them), I waited with my new friends for our turn - which wasn't easy for me. But at least I had my Walker to sit down on; and I wasn't alone.
Just before my turn with Anthony, I played my mobile phone ringtone. Well, I just couldn't resist; after all, my ringtone is the Phantom of the Opera theme song. Naturally. That greatly amused everybody.
When my turn finally came to get Anthony's signature, he certainly noticed me. Well, he couldn't really NOT notice me - I guess being dressed as The Phantom, as I was, would make me stand out. Anyway, he said, "Look at her." when he saw me.
And then he said that I looked better than he did. Not phlamin' likely, Anthony. Well pholks, Anthony seemed kinda eager to get over to me when he saw me, so he moved (when he could) through the crowd towards me. It must have only been because I was dressed up as The Phantom though; as Anthony himself had been earlier that day. So, ladies and gentlemen; it looks like that's the secret to catching The Phantom. If ya wanna catch The Phantom Of The Opera, ya've gotta dress up as him. Anyway, when Anthony reached me - unscathed - he signed both Teena's and my Programs which I had with me. Although I did mention three signatures from Anthony, didn't I? Well, ladies and gentlemen - after signing the two Programs for me, Anthony asked me if I would like him to sign my mask.
Well, YES! I mean; as if I could/would refuse an offer from THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA himself! NEVER. So - I lifted my hands up to remove my hat and my glasses, so that I could then remove my mask to give to him for signing, but he suggested that I leave it on.
So...after removing my glasses, Anthony slowly, gently brushed aside a wisp of hair from my right temple, before he signed my mask - while I was wearing it! I was not aware of the wisp of hair because, having the mask on, I couldn't feel it or see it.
My friend phantomess stated afterwards that Anthony had gently brushed it aside.
Ooooh! And she was jealous. Awwww.
Finally - when everybody got their items signed and their photos taken, Anthony made his way off to “get a Lemonade”. I had a Lemonade in my Black Phantom of the Opera Tote Bag as well. So I have something in common with Anthony Warlow…besides being dressed up as THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA that day.
When Anthony left, my new friends and I made our way around to the front Lounge of the Casino to chat about the show - as well as to get to know each other a little better while we got our breaths back. In this Lounge area, there were also a few kids drawing on paper on the table. Personally, I thought that they really should have been in bed. Anyway, they said that “I looked like a witch!" Let me tell you - THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA was NOT impressed. NOT impressed at all. I should have Punjabbed them all right there and then. But, wouldn't ya know it, I had left my Lasso down below in my Lair.
While phantomess, ozzieconxtion, and I sat and chatted after experiencing the PHANTASTIC Show, ozzieconxtion gave me a lovely sparkly mask. After a little while in the Lounge, we left to go to ozzieconxtion's Hotel Room - but also to get away from the kids. We spent some time there before phantomess and I left to go to our own Hotels. After saying goodbye to ozzieconxtion, both phantomess and I got a taxi to my Hotel, and stayed for a little while; apparently, phantomess's Hotel was just around the corner from mine. I was leaving the next day, and I had to ensure that I had everything - and I needed to get some sleep too. Before removing my Phantom Costume to get into my pyjamas, phantomess took some photos of me.
I seemed to make quite a good impression that day, I'm very pleased to say. Phantomess also gave me a chocolate mask. (Thank you, phantomess.) Finally, I saw her off, and then after fully removing my makeup, getting my pajamas on, and packing my remaining Luggage, I crashed into bed.
MONDAY, SEPTEMBER 15, 2008
Oh no. Today, I fly back to Adelaide. GROAN.
8am
I get up, shower, and dress for my flight - although, before checking-out of my Hotel, I will meet up once again with Cathy to have some breakfast with her.
8:45am
I go down to the front foyer to wait for Cathy. As I wait, I look through some nearby brochures - just to pass some time.
Around 9am
Cathy arrives at my Hotel, so we go over the street to have some breakfast. We laugh and chat - and talk about THE PHANTOM until it is time for me to checkout of my Hotel. I showed her my signed Program, my signed white mask, and my new sparkly mask. (She did not see the show on the 14th. Tut tut tut.) Once I’m checked out, we both cross the street again; this time to go to the taxi stand. We move up to the front taxi, where I get in, and say goodbye once again. Cathy takes another taxi behind me. After my Luggage is put into the back of the taxi, I tell the driver to take me to the Airport. We are soon on our way.
While traveling to the Airport, I notice the road signs - which, incidentally, also mention Woolongong. Hmm - we could be going to Woolongong at this moment.
I hear you ask: "Jaime, WHY are you suddenly mentioning Woolongong? What does Woolongong have to do with seeing POTO in Sydney?" Well - it just so happens that Mr. Anthony Warlow was born there. That's why I'm mentioning it. Anyway, after several miles, the driver turns right towards the Airport; the road to Woolongong stretches out to the left.
9:30am
After being dropped off at the Airport, and I have my things together, I make my way to the checking-in point. I receive my Boarding Pass and after checking through the X-Ray machine - QUIETLY this time - I move through to the Passengers' Lounge. I wait at Boarding Bay number 34 for the flight back to (SIGH) Adelaide. After sitting for a while, I move around. Since I have some time to kill - again - I decide to do some more filming. I found out later that phantomess went to the Airport with the hope of catching up with me before my flight. (Wasn't that nice?) BUT - one can NOT catch up with the elusive PHANTOM OF THE OPERA.
2:10pm
I am safely on board the plane - all buckled up and sitting quietly. The plane is now slowly reversing out of its Parking Bay. I am really NOT EXACTLY over the moon about returning to LeBooooring; THE LAND OF NOD. ZZZZ.
2:25pm
The plane is now picking-up speed for take-off. VROOM!
2:28pm
As Frank Spencer: "Ooooh! We're in the air!" Again.
2:30pm
Yep, there go my ears! Again. This time, I am sitting in an aisle seat - although at the left-hand side of the plane - as when I came on Thursday. I may not have a Window Seat this time, but in a sense, I actually have TWO Window Seats. I am sitting right in the middle, Window Seat-wise. I am in Seat 5C this time. At one point, I stand up during this flight - just to try to stretch a bit. I have a good view outside - through a few windows on each side.
3:35pm (Adelaide time)
We are still flying, but we've had to fasten our seat-belts, due to some air turbulence. It's still a little while yet before landing. I can wait. I so CAN wait.
3:52pm
Starting the landing approach now.
3:56pm
Touchdown. GROAN.
4:25pm
After leaving the plane, I was grateful to obtain a ride from a woman driving an Airport buggy. Climbing onto the buggy, she drove me towards the Luggage area. Taking me as far as she could, I then got off the buggy, and collecting my Black "Wheelie" bag and the White-Handled plastic bag, I waited with other Passengers for their Luggage to arrive. Finally, I saw my Suitcase - this time I found it quickly and retrieved it with no trouble whatsoever, I am very pleased to say. HOORAY. I asked a young gentleman if he could grab it for me; which he did. Once I had my Suitcase, I retrieved my Walker (close by), and made my way out to the taxi-stand.
Stepping out to the taxi-stand, I am shocked - but VERY HAPPY - to see that it is raining! YAY! Although it is very windy too - which is not so wonderful. So - here I am - having arrived safely back from my Holiday in Sydney to see THE PHANTOM OF THE OPERA last night. And, to say that I am pooped is putting it mildly. Time to get home and see my Phantom Collection once again. And sleep.
HOW I WISH that Mr. Anthony Warlow - AND Mr. Michael Crawford - could see my PHANTASTIC Phantom Collection!
